What is ANSI?
ANSI stands for the American National Standards Institute. The organization, along with ISEA (International Safety Equipment Association), worked together to create a standard for high-visibility clothing that mirrored the EN-471 standard used in Europe. Since ANSI and ISEA are not government agencies, this standard is simply a suggested standard for states to adopt on some level or variation.
The standard contains an overview of the components that go into high-visibility products. Fabric, quality, labeling, color, fading, reflective quality & quantity, background material quantity, shrinkage, suggested styles, and cleaning are some of the components specified in the standard. The standard describes 5 main classes of apparel. Each state and/or local government has chosen a specific standard, so it is important to know the standard required in your work area.
Below you can find a brief description of each ANSI class.
ANSI CLASS ONE
217 square inches of visible, fluorescent background material (usually orange or lime/yellow)
155 square inches of visible, reflective material
ANSI CLASS THREE
1240 square inches of visible, fluorescent background material (usually orange or lime/yellow)
310 square inches of visible, reflective material
ANSI CLASS PSV
450 square inches of visible, fluorescent background (usually orange or lime/yellow)
201 square inches of visible, reflective material
ANSI CLASS E
465 square inches of visible, fluorescent background material (usually orange or lime/yellow)
108 square inches of visible, reflective material
Class E garments are shorts or pants that are to be worn with a Class Two garment. Together they make a Class Three ensemble.
ANSI CLASS TWO
775 square inches of visible, fluorescent background material (usually orange or lime/yellow)
201 square inches of visible, reflective material
